Door Finishing
Timber doors require special treatment so please be sure to read our Finishing Instructions carefully and protect your door prior to fitting. Timber doors must be completely sealed to prevent any moisture getting in or out. We always recommend a high quality product is used to protect your door. Please see below for further details and also refer to our Finishing guidelines and our Terms and Conditions.
External Timber Doors and Frames
For external doors we strictly recommend only an oil or solvent-based varnish or paint is used which must be “micro-porous” (breathable).
We recommend the use of Sadolin translucent wood stain systems (or the comparable paint systems). Click on the tin to find out more and to purchase your finishing product.
Each finishing product will have instructions, however we would generally advise that a staged process is followed starting with 2 generous coats of a base stain followed by a further 2 liberal top coats.
Any adjusted/planed areas (planed edges, cut outs for hinges, locks, letter plates, handles etc) must be sealed prior to hanging to prevent any moisture ingress.
Regular checks of the finish should be undertaken throughout the life of the door.

Internal Wooden Doors and Linings
Internal doors must be finished with a good quality oil/solvent based wood stain or lacquer immediately after removing packaging and before fitting.
We recommend the use of Sikkens medium build solvent borne interior varnish (or the comparable paint system). Click on the tin to find out more and to purchase your finishing product.
Note 1: Prefinished internal doors will feature finished faces of the door (front and back) however the top bottom and sides of the door are not considered fully finished and must therefore be treated with a finish prior to fitting. Any adjustments such as planed edges must be treated as per unfinished internal doors.
Note 2: The finish that is supplied on primed doors is not considered a sealant, and is there only to ensure that the final finish can be easily applied. Please refer to guidelines for Unfinished Interior Doors.
Please refer to our Finishing Instructions and Terms and Conditions and do not hesitate to contact our helpful customer services team if you have any queries as we are always happy to help.
Warnings:
1. DO finish your door prior to fitting
2. DO apply finish to any planed/adjusted areas
3. DO use a flexible micro-porous finish
4. DO NOT use a water based finish
5. DO NOT use a penetrating finish such as Danish/Tung oil
Please do not be tempted to cut corners as correct finishing is critical to the protection of your door and insufficient protection will void the guarantee on your door.
Please do contact us if you have any concerns or queries regarding finishing your doors.
